Why NATO was NEVER a threat to Russia

Putin became acting president on 31 Dec. 1999. He was first elected President of Russia on 26 March 2000, and then re-elected in 2004, 2012, 2018, and 2024. Putin was careful to eliminate any potential rivals for president. Russia claims they were threatened by NATO expansion. This is NOT true for the following reasons:

1. No country in Europe was spending a lot on their military budgets. They had no ability to attack Russia. There was no popular movement in these countries to attack Russia.

2. Eastern European countries were NEVER a military threat to Russia. The bulk of their military was left over Soviet weapons from the 1970s and 1980s. Claiming Russia was threatened by NATO is being used by Putin for political purposes – to keep the people focused on a perceived threat.

3. The countries of eastern Europe were anxious to join NATO because they knew Russia is an imperialist country and always has been. After the first Russian invasion of Chechnya, the countries of Czechia, Hungary and Poland joined NATO on March 12,1999. Ukraine is not in NATO and probably will never be.

4. Due to Putin’s destruction of Chechnya, the build up of the Russian military and knowing Putin is a war monger, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia joined NATO in 2004. These countries joined NATO for their own protection. No country wanted to attack Russia.

5. Sweden and Finland were not a member of NATO until after Russia invaded Ukraine. Sweden has remained neutral since 1814 – even during World War One, World War Two and the Cold War. Sweden refused to join NATO in 1949, But now the threat from Russia is so great, Sweden joined NATO in March 2024. In 2013, Russia simulated a nuclear attack on Sweden.

Finland chose neutrality after World War Two and refused to join NATO in 1949. But after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Finland decided to join NATO in April, 2023.

6. Russia claims the U.S. violated treaties, or at the least the spirit of treaties signed with the U.S. The truth is Russia/Soviet Union has violated virtually every treaty they have signed with the U.S./NATO.

The root cause of the war in Ukraine is Putin’s desire for an empire, not NATO expansion. Putin doesn’t want the former Soviet countries to join NATO so they can be conquered one by one without having to fight NATO.

Former slave states of the USSR have decided they never want to be ruled by Russia again and have joined a mutual defense alliance – NATO – that protects them from that. Russia is NOT defending itself against NATO — it is targeting neighbors seeking to remain independent from Russia’s iron rule.

Some narrow minded U.S. politicians want to pull out of NATO. This would GUARANTEE World War Three.
