Presidents of the US Article

Lyndon Johnson

Lyndon Johnson was one of the WORST presidents in U.S. history. Johnson became President on November 22, 1963, following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He won in a landslide in 1964 but chose not to run for reelection in 1968 due to his mismanagement of the War. Johnson’s term as president ended on January 20, 1969.

Johnson ‘war’ on poverty created a permanent – and ever growing – dependency class, resulted in tax increases, did great harm to America’s work ethic and did not end poverty. Government programs became more corrupt with each passing year. Johnson’s social policies destroyed 200 years of the American spirit of self-reliance.

Johnson got us stuck in Vietnam in a war he refused to fight to win, preferring to waste thousands of American lives. He increased troop numbers from 16,000 in 1963 to over 500,000 by 1968 – and still couldn’t defeat North Vietnam. Johnson’s incompetence led to widespread protests and criticism, affecting his popularity. Johnson was a total failure as Commander-in-Chief. He had no strategy for winning the war.

Johnson’s only major accomplishments was passing The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and environmental legislation.
